Oakmont Country Club has been the host of 12 PGA Major Championships - most recently, the 2016 US Open - and host of the US Women's Open three times. Additionally, Oakmont has hosted the US Amateur five times.
Oakmont's famous "Church Pews" bunker separates the third and fourth holes, but its treacherous greens are the signature element here, as they are among the toughest in the world.
In 2016, eventual champion, Dustin Johnson, was assessed a one-stroke penalty when, while lining up a putt on the 5th green, his ball moved slightly. Johnson brought the movement to the attention of the on-course referee and was told there would be no penalty. Later, Johnson was notified of a possible penalty while on the 12th tee, but went on to win by three shots. The penalty was not assessed to Johnson until he reached the scorer's tent after the 18th hole, leading to wide criticism of the USGA and its handling of the infraction.
